Translucent glass with red overlay

1760 – 1820

5.8 cm

Provenance:

Micawber’s Antiques, Sydney (1973)

Description

Glass; overlaid in transparent ruby- red with clusters of hibiscus, orchids, begonia and a prunus tree, two dragonflies flitting between the branches, the raised foot rim with a broad edge.

The composition is well controlled with good spacing between the individual elements of the design, although these are rendered a little stiffly, pointing to a later date of manufacture. The hibiscus is an autumn flower and symbolises wealth and a dragonfly together with begonia means ‘May there be peace in the universe’.
