Description

Glass; the milk-white body with a double overlay of black on red, depicting nine precious bronze vessels, the raised foot rim layered in matching colours.

The milk-white ground was first used in the series of enamelled glass snuff bottles inscribed with the Guyuexuan hall mark during the period 1760-1800 and became an obvious ground for glass overlay because of the contrast it could provide. This bottle is one of many recorded with a similar style of double overlay, usually in black and red, and both in shape and the style in which the subject-matter is presented shows similarities to the enamelled porcelain snuff bottles of the Daoguang period (1821- 1850).
