Nephrite of flawless white colour

1750-185

6.3 cm

Provenance:

Robert Hall (1991)

Description

Nephrite of flawless white colour; with a narrow mouth and supported on a well carved ring foot with rounded edges, very well hollowed.

A large number of jade and jadeite snuff bottle of rectangular shape were made between approximately 1770-1850 (see Treasury1, no. 178), mostly of quite slender form.

This bottle is much wider, allowing the shoulders to slope gently thus investing it with a tremendous sculptural impact which is enhanced by the flawless white material. The narrow mouth and good hollowing appear to be characteristics of the whole group. Two similarly impressive white nephrite bottles, One having belonged to Prince Ding Zaiquan (See no. 91 below) are illustrated in Treasury 1, nos. 154 and 162).
