Nephrite pebble carved as bunch of grapes

1800-185

5.7 cm

Provenance:

Jen Ho Co., Hong Kong (1975)

Description

Nephrite of pebble material; with a greyish skin carved to depict a broad leaf with incised veins covering a bunch of grapes.

The unusual greyish colour of the skin on this pebble has been cleverly used to depict a large leaf covering the grapes. The carving is slightly stiff, however, lacking the flowing movement of no. 62 below and this is a pointer to the nineteenth century as standards inevitably declined from the heights of the previous century. Nevertheless, the overall effect

remains pleasing.
