Westlake green glass with dragons

1730 – 1770

6 cm

Provenance:

Robert Hall (1993)

Description

Glass; the bubble-suffused body with a wide mouth and thick walls, overlaid on each side in deep relief in transparent pale green with a chilong, the dog-like head in the centre within the coils of the body, the overlay suffused with dark specks, attributed to the Imperial glassworks, Beijing.

Although carved in a rare pale green colour, this bottle appears to belong to the series discussed under no. 43. The chilong are carved with similar coiled power and there are the two contrasting beasts on either side. This is typical of the treatment of the chi on items made for the court. The mouth is very wide, another feature of this group.
